A relatively new breed, the Bielefelder originates from Bielefeld, Germany in the 1970s. They are one of only a few auto sexing chickens. Meaning that at a day old the sex can be determined based on feather color. This heavy bird is family friendly and so docile that even the roosters are envied. They are great foragers with an exceptional awareness of predators. Non-broodiness and good motherly instincts don’t usually come together, but the Bielefelder is a terrific combo of both. They are cold hardy, adapt to heat well, and will lay consistently through the winter. Bielefelders’ have the genetic pool of Barred Rocks, New Hampshire Reds, Malines, and Wyandottes. Female chicks are dark while male chicks are light in color. Female chicks are distinguishable from other similar breeds because most have a faint white dot on the head, and all have gray tones in the legs.
